Professor CHARLES MERRITT

CARLTON

(December 12, 1928 – March 9, 2008) of the

University
of
Rochester

,

Rochester

NY
,
USA

has been an outstanding scholar in the field of Romance Linguistics with a marked interest in Lexicology (quantitative analysis). He was also singularly attracted by the study of Romanian and, following his tenure of a Fulbright professorship at the

University
of
Cluj-Napoca

in the 1970′s, of Romanian Culture and Civilization, as well. Under his guidance many American students in Linguistics chose Romanian as their area of concentration. Owing to him, the

University
of
Rochester

became in the last three decades of the twentieth century one of the most reputed centers for the pursuit of Romanian Studies.

During his frequent visits to

Romania

, Professor Carlton collected a large number of albums, dictionaries, books and artifacts  in such fields as: language and literature, archaeology and history, architecture and the arts, photography, philosophy, anthropology and religion, geography, folklore, (costumes & dances included), the ethnic minorities, the theatres, philharmonic orchestras, and opera houses, a. s.f ., a.s.o. He co-edited Miorita, a Journal of Romanian Studies, co-translated into English a major Romanian work of literary theory (The Biography of the Idea of Literature by Adrian Marino) and co-edited An Annotated Bibliography of English Translations of Romanian Poetry (from the beginnings to the year 1989). In 1998 Professor Carlton hosted and provided the logistics for the Annual Congress of ARA (The American-Romanian Academy of Sciences and the Arts). He was indeed a great friend of

Romania

and of lots of Romanians whom he generously encouraged, befriended and even drove them to places of tourist interest or accommodated them in his cozy and hospitable Fairport home, assisted by Mary his energetic and devoted wife. His passing away will be sorely missed by all who have been fortunate of being within reach of his bountiful heart and exquisite mind. Apart from his wife Mary, Charlie is survived by their three sons: David, John, and Stephen, by his sister Jean Denton, and by four grandchildren. May God rest him in peace and protect his family in their bereavement!
